Choosing an All-Purpose Seasoning Blend
Go back just a few years and you might have noticed just one or two options on the shelves for an all-purpose seasoning. Today there are dozens! How are you to choose when there are that many? Here are a few tips that can help you choose the perfect all-purpose seasoning blend for use at your home or to carry with you to add a kick of flavor when eating out.
- Review ingredient order- Ingredients on a label are listed in order based on percentage of the overall volume. If the first few ingredients are not ones you are fond of or want to be a prominent flavor in your dishes, this isn’t the seasoning you want.
- Review types of ingredients- If you are trying to reduce your salt intake, you don’t want an all-purpose seasoning that is mostly sodium– not to mention that you are paying a premium for something that is relatively inexpensive. Look closely at all the ingredients, as many use artificial ingredients and fillers. Ideally, you do not want to see “spices” or “other flavors” included because you have no idea what you are getting.
- Review color- Think about the things you want to use your seasoning for and whether the color of the all-purpose seasoning would be appealing. A nice, neutral color that comes from natural spices and ingredients is going to look far better on your roasted chicken than something artificially colored.
